In 2016, the Australian Conrad Spirit of Innovation Challenge was formed to connect students in Australia to leading innovators around the globe.

As part of an on-going commitment to encouraging the innovative visions of young people, this year’s Australian Conrad Spirit of Innovation Challengepromises to be bigger and better than ever. In partnership with a global network of industry leaders in both private and government sectors, the Spirit of Innovation Challenge provides students with the tools necessary to reimagine their world in countless ways.

Students (in teams of two to five) will tackle a world-wide problem, enhance an existing innovation or create an idea and product from scratch. The sky is the limit in terms of what students can develop. No idea is too big, no proposal too small. However, students will have to follow the development booklets to create a realistic, desirable and feasible innovation that will impress the judging panel.

The judging panel itself is made up of volunteers from across the globe from the United States, Iran, Australia, Canada and beyond. On top of that, students connect with mentors from across the country and learn valuable, hands-on experience with Design Thinking, Entrepreneurship and Innovation speakers and workshops.

Submitted student innovations are categorised into five categories: Aerospace and Aviation, Cyber technology and Security, Energy and Environment, and Health and Nutrition. Students have to advance through several stages where they focus on the science, business and presentation elements of their idea. Those who make it through to the Final Power Pitch Stage will be invited to participate in the Australian Conrad Spirit of Innovation Summit where they will present their idea to a panel of industry leaders and specialists in a Shark-Tank-like Power Pitch session. From there, each category will have two winning teams: Best Innovation and Best Power Pitch. The best overall innovation will have the honour of presenting at the Kennedy Space Center at the US Conrad Spirit of Innovation Challenge.

The Summit is designed to promote collegiality and a free exchange of ideas. While some traditional competitions involve more competitive activities, the Innovation Summit, aims to encourage young innovators, allow them to network with students from across the world and get the chance to see their ideas turned into real, marketable problems. Through a spirit of collegiality and respect, participating students have come away with a greater appreciation of their strengths and weaknesses and how to develop real-world group and problem-solving skills.
